Effective Strategies for Mitigating Feather Pecking and Cannibalism in Cage-Free W-36 Pullets

چکیده

Pecking is one of the most concerning poultry welfare issues in layer houses, especially cage-free (CF) housing system. behavior may lead to severe feather pecking (SFP) and cannibalism when birds feel frustrated, stressed, dominant over other birds. Since caused by multi-factorial problems (e.g., hormonal influence, environment, dietary composition, genetic differences), it very important find optimal strategies for reducing damage. The objective this study was evaluate effects pullet age management practices on identify mitigation strategy. Four climate-controlled rooms were used, each 200 Hy-Line W36 pullets, a total 800 pullets from 0 16 weeks (WOA). tested at different ages, including an isolated chamber (IC) 14 WOA, IC with lotion (water, aloe vera gel, tea tree oil, calendula, methyl anthranilate), block 15 WOA. Data mortality collected daily 13 WOA during block, IC, treatments entire cycle treatment. Results show that SFP significantly increased bird’s (p < 0.01). started 5 About 16% found peck damages In study, blocks did not reduction order, possibly due alarming rates. Isolating into applying resulted significant decrease 0.05) 0.05). This provides reference commercial CF egg producers develop on-farm mitigating damage cannibalism.

Feather Pecking of Laying Hens in Different Stocking Density and Type of Cage

Both stocking rate and housing systems are main factors influencing the occurrence of feather pecking in laying hens raised in conventional cage system. This study examines the effects of different type of cage and stock density on feather pecking behaviour in hens. Total of 216 Hisex Brown hens at 16 weeks of age were randomly selected and put into 2 types of battery cages: conventional cages ...

Effect of manipulating feathers of laying hens on the incidence of feather pecking and cannibalism.

Feather pecking is a problem in commercial laying hens, particularly in loose-housing systems, where many hens can be affected by only a few feather peckers. In addition, feather pecking can become an even larger problem if it spreads throughout the flock. There are several possible ways that feather pecking may spread. The simplest way is that one hen may damage the feathers of a hen, and anot...

Analysis of severe feather pecking behavior in a high feather pecking selection line.

Even though feather pecking (FP) in laying hens has been extensively studied, a good solution to prevent chickens from this behavior under commercial circumstances has not been found. Selection against FP behavior is possible, but for a more effective selection across different populations, it is necessary to characterize the genetic mechanism associated with this behavior. In this study, we us...
